Northwestern Mutual is a large mutual company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Through the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, the marketing name for the company’s nationwide sales distribution arm, the company provides life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability insurance, annuities, mutual funds, and employee benefit services. Founded in Janesville, Wisconsin in 1857, it is the nation's largest direct provider of individual life insurance in the United States, with more than $1 trillion in force.

The company earned the highest customer satisfaction score among U.S. life insurers in the 2008 University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index survey. The company has consistently been named "America's Most Admired" life/health insurance company by Fortune Magazine for the last 25 years.[1] Northwestern Mutual maintains the highest available ratings for insurance financial strength from all four major rating agencies:A. M. Best, Moody's, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings.[1][2]
